Aboriginal people have lived in South Australia for at least 44,000 years. Many of our parks contain sites of significance for Aboriginal communities, including rock engravings, artwork and archaeological material.
The maintenance of biodiversity and ecosystem processes in reserves is dependent on appropriate fire regimes. We recognise the need to manage fire in a way that protects and enhances biodiversity values as well as offering protection to life and property.
There are a great variety of places of heritage significance within South Australia's parks system, ranging from residences to lighthouses, whaling sites, graves, a fort and a kiosk. This record of locations is derived from the list of State Heritage Places entered in the South Australian Heritage Register.
The parks reserve system includes all reserves proclaimed under the National Parks and Wildlife Act 1972, the Wilderness Protection Act 1992 and conservation reserves dedicated to the Minister under the Crown Lands Act 1929. The National Parks and Wildlife Act 1972 and the Wilderness Protection Act 1992 outline the requirements for preparation of management plans. A management plan must be prepared as soon as practicable after the constitution of a reserve.
